Adelaide as a Living Lab

About Adelaide

Adelaide is one of Australia’s leading smart cities, in recognition of the following:

  • The layout, size and scale of the City of Adelaide positions the city perfectly as a “living lab” for smart city ideas, pilots and projects.
  • High level of strategic cooperation between state and local government, university and the private sector.
  • AdelaideFree, the public access WiFi network, which was the first of its kind in Australia when it was officially launched in 2014. Watch a Nine Network News segment about the AdelaideFree WiFi launch on YouTube.
  • The inclusion of Adelaide as one of Cisco’s nine “Lighthouse Cities” (along with Barcelona, Chicago, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Songdu, Jaipur and Dubai).
  • Ten Gigabit Adelaide is a revolutionary high-speed, high-performance fibre optic data network being rolled out to commercial buildings across the City of Adelaide. The network will enable businesses and organisations to share and receive high volumes of data at phenomenal 10-gigabits-per-second.
  • Adelaide is the first GigCity in Australia and connects the city's innovation hubs. It is also part of the US Ignite networking, which connects Adelaide to 22 other GigCites across the US.
  • Recognition as “Australia’s most innovative region” in relation to the best coordinated ecosystem of support for entrepreneurs and innovators (Australian Technologies Competition, 2015).
  • The startup ecosystem has been further advanced with the introduction of the Office of the South Australian Chief Entrepreneurs in 2018 and the creation of an innovation neighbourhood, Lot Fourteen, at the 7ha site of the former Royal Adelaide Hospital.
A Smarter, Better Connected City

As a Cisco lighthouse city, Adelaide is one of the very few cities ready to develop and pilot new urban services and solutions to benefit the customer and citizen experience.
